Holy guac, guys! Did you think I was gone forever? Holidays and family and end of the year shenanigans have pretty much caught my attention for a bit, but I’m going to get back to regular posting now. Thanks for sticking with me during my small break, and I’m really excited to get back into blogging on the regular.

I don’t really have any new years resolutions, or anything like that. The only real resolution that I’ve ever made is to write 1000 words a day for an entire year, and I hit that goal. I am not going to be anywhere near silly enough to try that again this year, with the fact that I’m going to be having a baby >_> That’s setting myself up for at least one day of failure when I’m popping the kiddo out xD However, I do like to set myself a few goals and aspirations for what I want to get accomplished. It’s not a resolution… it’s more a “Planning in advance” so I can have an idea of what I’m aiming for.

Firstly, I plan on trying to self pub some stories this year. It’s scary, and I’ve always tried to talk myself out of it… but now, I really want to go for it. I think that it would be a good thing, and… the worst that can happen is that I wouldn’t make money off of it? Since I like to write short stories anyway… I’m not really losing out on anything. And who knows, I might win something pretty fantastic.

As my second little goal, which ties in with the first, I’m going to try to be writing at least one short story a month. I think that just getting into the practice of that will be pretty good for me, if only to keep my creativity cranking. I so often get caught up in commissions that I completely forget to take time to write for myself. I don’t want to do that anymore. I really want to make sure that I always flex my creativity muscles in venues that I really enjoy and want to pursue.

I wish I could say that I was going to start and keep a bullet journal for the year ;-; but I know that I never keep up with those. I wish that I could… I don’t know what it is about me and a physical journal, but I seem completely and utterly incapable of keeping up with one. It’s crazy.

My third… goal? I guess it’s a goal. My hubs and I and our little family are planning on a cross country move sometime around July. It’s going to be crazy, hectic, and so worth it. I’m not sure exactly what the goal is here though… prep, mentally get myself ready… make sure that I don’t go crazy in the process xD

So yeah, that’s a little update on me. What about you guys? What are your goals for the year? I’d love to hear about them, if you’d like to share. Make a blog about it — put those goals on blast in public. I find that one of the best ways to keep up with doing something that you said you’re going to do is simply by letting people know that you’re going to do it. Accountability is… well, it’s really key, for me at least, in making sure that I keep up with everything that I want to do. If I know that people KNOW what I’m planning, I feel a pressure not to let them down or make myself a liar, and that pressure ends up spurring me on when I thought that I would otherwise not be able to do it.

You should try it. It could be good for ya!

Here we are, once again! It’s time for Ego’s blog challenge! This time, we’re going to mix it up a bit again. I’m not going to ask you to write a short story. Instead, I want you to take a few minutes and think… write a blog about what your goals are! Why do you have a blog? What do you want to accomplish with it. Further than that, why do you write? Where would you like to see yourself as a writer 5 years from now, 10 years from now… really reflect on what you want to do, and get it down into words. Making a statement that other people can see is like making a commitment.

I want us all to commit to our dreams and ambitions — that way, we can keep each other on track.

Monthly Wrap Up

Scratch the month in the photo and bring it up to the word yearly, and you’ll have exactly where I am! I’m going to go ahead and get my Yearly Writing Update, and I apologize for the fact that I haven’t give you monthly updates for the past little bit. Like I said (like I’ve said way too much) I’ve been busy and having things going on a lot… but all of that should be coming to a head soon, and I should be able to go into what’s actually been going on! I’m excited for that.

Anyway, no need to explain those things. Let’s get on with the update!

yearHere it is. It’s just a small chart, and it seems like it doesn’t hold that much… but goodness me, it holds all of my writing for the year. I can’t believe that I got so far. Let’s start first with the goals that I set for myself.

Main Yearly Goal: Write 1000 words every day of the year. I am super proud to say that I accomplished this! There were times when I thought that I wouldn’t be able to, and times when I wanted to cheat and count writing that really shouldn’t count… but I sucked it up and I made it through. I stuck to my personal goals and the parameters I set myself at the beginning of the year… and I made it. I had to fight for it some months, and some months it came completely effortless… but I made it. And more than that, I really learned a few things about myself. Writing every day helps with my stress, and it truly does form a proper habit. On the days that I didn’t get to write my words until close to the end of the day, I felt stressed, I felt unhappy, I felt incomplete. Writing is a part of me, and this year of experience taught me that.

2016 Stretch Goal: Write 1 million words in the year. As you can see, I didn’t accomplish this goal, but I’m not upset about it. I set my stretch goal as something that I will have to perform excellently to achieve, as something that I will have to super push myself to do. It’s something that I can work towards, so that I have the ability to push myself and to better myself. I didn’t make it, but I made it extremely far. If I’d have kept my goal of only 1,00o words a day, I would have had around 400,000 words.

Instead, I have nearly 850,000. I doubled what I wanted to do, I doubled my minimum goal. I damn near got to my 1 million. It gives me hope, and it gives me something to work even harder towards in 2017.

Reflections:

Overall, 2016 was a pretty amazing year for writing. I ended up getting back into fanfiction fairly hardcore throughout the year, and I’ve made some fantastic relationships and expanded my writing ability over it. I’ve started on a second draft for my novel Cerulean Darkness, which is something that I’ve never ventured into before. I’ve also set a pace for myself for my writing this year.

I’m going to do at least 500 words every day in creative writing – original creative writing – throughout 2017. I’ve gotten more comfortable with short stories, with writing prompts, and with blogging. I’ve expanded my readers by so many, and I really have to thank all of you for that. You’ve been amazing, and an inspiration. Getting to talk with all of you and get your input as well as getting to know you has been a real pleasure.

I feel like I’ve grown as a writer in 2016. I feel like I’ve expanded my abilities, and opened so many doors for myself… and I’m so excited to walk through those in 2017 and see where they lead. I’ve set myself some fantastic goals, and I can’t want to start striving for them!

Hey everyone! So, the New Year is going to be ringing in here at California very soon! I’ve been talking to a few of my friends about Resolutions, and I’ve been seeing a lot of people posting their opinions on them via facebook and other social media… and actually putting them into a negative light. I figured that a good way to get my blog on would be to go ahead and talk about resolutions and how I handle them.

In truth, I think that they’re fantastic, if you approach them realistically. People who swear up and down that they’re going to go to the gym every day, twice a day when they’ve never gone to the gym in their entire life >_> Hmmm… see, that’s jumping the gun a bit. I think that making the resolution to exercise at least twice a week is more plausible. For me, I always set two goals, because it makes things easier.

I’ve talked about this before, but this just seems like the perfect opportunity to talk about it again – I have a few goals for myself, and I’m pretty happy with them. I’ll lay my goals out!

Goals Number One: Write 1,000 words a day, every day for 2017. (A note that this may be adjusted up or down accordingly, depending on how things play out over the first of the year.)  Write at least 500 words in creative writing every day. – Stretch Goal: Write 1 million words in a year.

Goal Number Two: Read at least 1 book every month in 2017 and get a review up! – Stretch Goal: Read a book a week for 2017.

Goal Number Three: Finish the first Draft of Limbo, and pick between Limbo and Cerulean Darkness to finally edit for a second draft. – Stretch Goal: Finish both second drafts.

Goal Number Four: Blog Every Day. – No Stretch Goal, but go easy on yourself on the days that you can’t. Try to get out a minimum of at least 3 a week, as long as things are going all right. 

 

So, as you can see, I handle my goals a little differently than a lot of people that I know. I put two levels to my goals – a minimum… something that I know I can handle. It’s still pushing myself to do something new and something that I might not otherwise do, but it’s not so stressful as going all out on something that would be super taxing and easy to fail. The stretch goal is in place so I will push myself. I shouldn’t be taking it easy. I should be trying to better myself.

I look at it this way – if you’re gonna to try to go to the gym… give yourself two levels of it,or a midpoint goal. Say: I’m going to exercise twice a week, even if it’s just a walk. Midpoint to: I want to go to the Gym twice a week and work out for an hour. And your stretch goal can be going to the gym every day. You might not make that stretch goal, but working towards it, I bet you’ll at least hit that minimum goal you set for yourself. Don’t think of Resolutions for the new year as something that you have to do, and the end all to everything. Think of it as something you can do to better yourself, and something that you can accomplish.

And most importantly, don’t beat yourself up over it. You can make the year amazing just by staying positive and having a good attitude!

So, I’ve realized that a lot of this is concentrated versions of little bits of advice that I’ve sprinkled through my blogs. I’m probably going to make one master post of this all when I’m done with the series, so that people can find it and look through everything easily – I certainly want people to understand that I’m giving this advice and encouragement as just that… I know that everyone can succeed, if they put their mind to it, and if they figure out how to properly motivate themselves.

That’s what today’s blog is about. G is for Goals, and I think that everyone should have some.

When I was writing aimlessly, with no actual goal or intention in mind… there were days when I would write a ton. They were great days – fantastic days. They made me feel great. And then, there were the times when I wouldn’t write anything… for days. Maybe even weeks. And I honestly found myself more depressed/irritable/less fulfilled when I went on a big writing hiatus like that. I am literally one of those people who have to write frequently in order to function in a way that keeps me happy and positive. Writing is my stress relief, it’s one of my drugs of choice (the other being video games), and it helps me to feel like I can do things, and like I can function when the world gets crummy. I realized that, multiple times, but I was never sure as to what to do about it until recently.

I was on… tumblr? Or youtube. I’m not sure – but I saw someone posting about having a calendar with little stars on it, to tell you how much you wrote, which goals you accomplished, etc. I’d already come into December of 2015 deciding that I wanted to start the new year with a goal of writing 1,000 words every day. By making a calendar and holding myself accountable of my goals, I was completely capable of matching them, surpassing them, and feeling fantastic about myself at the end of the day. Step one of finding a way to meet your goals quite often comes from finding a way to keep yourself accountable, and to be able to see when you have and haven’t done them. For me, it’s brightly colored stars that help along the way – for you, it might be stars. It might be candy. It might be a bullet journal, or simply writing it down on a calendar. Whatever it is, make sure to do it.

Now, the other thing that I’ve learned about goals is that you have to make sure that they’re realistic. If I decided – my goal for every day is to write 15,000 words, because I’ve done that in a day before… that’s ridiculous. Yes, I can do it. Does it mean that I want to? Every single day?

Absolutely not.

A lot of people say that you should challenge yourself, and I absolutely applaud that. But I don’t think that you should push yourself so that your writing goal for the day is so hard to do that you’d rather avoid it than to get it done, or avoid it rather than to feel the guilt of trying to do it and failing. This is why I kind of have my goals set up in multiple ways.

I picked a number that I was comfortable with – that I knew for a fact I could write every single day, even if I only had a free 20 minutes to spare. We all have 20 minutes somewhere, whether it’s while we’re eating, while we’re on the bus, while we’re waiting at the bus stop, etc. We all have it. Take what you can get done in a short amount of time, and make that your goal. If you know for a fact that you can write 250 words in 20 minutes… that’s you. That’s a page a day, and that’s damn respectable. Don’t make your minimum goal something that you will fail at – because succeeding feels so much better.

I do, however, have two sets of goals. I have a minimum of 1,000 words a day – this is what I have to get done. And then, I have a stretch goal of 3,000 words a day. This is what I would like to get done. I don’t always meet or surpass that stretch goal; when I do, it feels amazing. If I don’t? That’s okay. I got my 1k.

So, what I’m saying is, set yourself a goal that you know you can attain, and have a secondary goal of what you want to attain. You aren’t copping out, you aren’t being lazy. You’re making sure that you don’t set yourself up to be disappointed. Raise that secondary goal as often as you feel like you can. If you find yourself constantly and easily meeting that secondary goal, raise the first one up by a bit – challenge yourself, but do it within reason!

I think the last thing that I want to touch on here is that goals are important for building self confidence and habit. I’ve written at least 1,000 words a day every single day since the start of 2016. It was harder to do at first, but now that I’m 5 months in, its like breathing. It’s perfect, and it makes me feel really good about myself to know that I can achieve what I put my mind to. Repetition is key – you form a habit after doing it for a few weeks. Once you’re in the habit of writing – whether it’s every day, a certain amount a week/per month, etc, it will come easier to you! Goals are important for both writing and your every day life, so strive towards setting and keeping them!

Set goals, achieve those goals. Surpass those goals. Get into the habit of it! Your writing will thank you!

So, just as I said I was going to do… I’m posting my wordcount for the week. On top of that, however… I figured out something else that I thought would be a lot of fun. I’m going to post the number of pages I’ve read every week! 

So, first of all.. I didn’t quite manage the 2000 per day that I wanted, but I still got a decent amount written! 5675 words!

This was split up over the course of 2 days, each with me doing in the a little less than 3000 range. I would have written more… but after those two really great days… my room mate brought me home whatever sickness it is that he contracted from the kids this week (he works at a school). I’ve been coughy, sneezy, sore throat and headached… Which makes me want to curl up with a good book. I’m hoping that I will be able to write more in this coming week, and I will keep you all updated! 

However, on the page front, I did much better. Altogether I read 1270 pages for the week! I think I’ll probably shoot for around 1000 pages each week to be read!
